Cantonese Opera Workshop

Cantonese Opera, also known as “Da Xi” or “Guangdong Da Xi,” is a major form of theatrical art that originated from Southern Opera. It began appearing in Guangdong and Guangxi during the Ming Dynasty’s Jiajing period. This art form combines singing, acting, recitation, and martial arts, accompanied by musicians, elaborate costumes, and abstract movements. Each role in Cantonese Opera has its unique attire and presentation.

Cantonese Opera was included in the first batch of 518 items listed as national intangible cultural heritage on May 20, 2006. Furthermore, it was recognized by UNESCO on September 30, 2009, as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
